Broomfield, Colorado, October 2009 – On Sunday, October 4, Horizon Organic® milk and Silk® Soymilk sponsored the annual Farm Aid concert, aimed at raising funds for and celebrating America's family farmers. The event was held in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri.
Horizon Organic and Silk also reduced the environmental impact of the concert's power use along with artist and fan travel through the purchase of carbon offsets sourced from clean, domestic wind power. An estimated 26,000 were in attendance. "For seven years, we've supported Farm Aid because we believe in everything the organization does to help American family farmers," said Blaine McPeak, president, Horizon Organic and Silk. "Family farmers are central to the Horizon and Silk brands and we want to do all we can to ensure that they continue to have the means and ability to provide the nation with fresh, healthy, organic and natural food." Farm Aid's mission is to build a vibrant family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews hosted the annual concert to raise funds to support Farm Aid's work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family-farmed food. Since 1985, Farm Aid has raised nearly $36 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, promote food from family farms, and build connections between farmers and consumers. At the event, Horizon Organic presented the Franklin family of Bliss, New York with the fourth annual Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Award. The Award, established to pay tribute to and congratulate farmers who demonstrate a long-term commitment to and passion for organic agriculture, acknowledges the strength of character, hard work, and resiliency required to own and operate a family-run, organic dairy farm. During the same presentation, Horizon Organic also recognized Jack and Cindy Perrin of Woodburn, Oregon, as the winner of its annual Quality Award -- an honor given to farmers who produce milk of the highest quality. Silk Soymilk was launched in 1996 and is the best-selling soymilk brand in the country. A cup of Silk contains as much calcium as a cup of milk and is loaded with soy protein, which when consumed as a part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. Silk is available in virtually all major supermarket chains and the complete product line includes a number of varieties and flavors to meet specific tastes and nutritional needs.
