Los Angeles, California, April 2009 – The Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet exhibit, featuring 50 super-sized globes that depict everyday solutions to global warming, opened late this month at Los Angeles’ Exposition Park Rose Garden.
The opening had help from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and 350 school children who were all on hand to spread the message of conservation and climate protection. The five-foot diameter, seven-foot-tall globes, designed by local and national artists each convey different messages about what ordinary citizens can do to combat global warming. “Here in California, we take the spirit of Earth Day and we live it every day,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “I am thrilled to be celebrating our environment and our planet today by shining a spotlight on the Cool Globes exhibit.” Cool Globes was inspired by Chicago-area environmental activist and mother of four Wendy Abrams who wanted to do something to showcase what people can do to help combat global warming. Abrams said “To most of us, the problem of global warming is overwhelming. We feel helpless and are not convinced that the small efforts we make to address climate change could really have an impact.” Los Angeles is the final stop on a three-city California tour, which included successful exhibits in San Francisco at Crissy Field, and San Diego, at Balboa Park and the Port of San Diego Embarcadero where hundreds of thousands experienced the globes. Over the past two years, they’ve been displayed in Chicago and Washington, D.C. The Cool Globes exhibit will be on display in Los Angeles until July 23. It will then travel to Houston, Texas this fall and to Europe in 2010. Additional support for the Los Angeles exhibit has been provided by FedEx, Kyocera, Squid & Squash Foundation, Strauss Foundation, Calpine, Vestas, Jonah Goodhart and Cristian Cardoso and Southwest Airlines.
