Washington, D.C., June 2011– Sisters Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne decided awhile back to trade in their careers (fashion and private equity) to pursue something a little sweeter, which was their passion for artful cupcakes. And so, Georgetown Cupcake was born.

Both lifelong bakers inspired by their grandmothers, Katherine and Sophie opened Georgetown Cupcake in February 2008 as D.C.’s first and only “cupcakery”. The quaint shop was initially tucked away on Potomac Street, before moving to the bustling M Street area, attracting many tourists, locals, and even celebrities. While their recipe is kept secret, it’s no secret to those who know of them how deliciously fresh and chic these cupcakes are.

Georgetown Cupcake is in baking mode throughout the day from their small kitchen to ensure customers are enjoying a cupcake that has just been baked and frosted. Products are baked fresh daily and are never held over from the prior day. Made with only the finest ingredients – including Valrhona chocolate imported from France, Madagascar bourbon vanilla, Plugra butter, Callebaut chocolate and fresh fruit – Katherine and Sophie pride themselves on their preservative-free cupcakes, freshly-baked, handmade topping-decorated goodies.

Starting with only a Kinko’s sign in the window three years ago last Valentine’s Day, Georgetown Cupcake has since developed a cult following in our nation’s capital and surrounding area, with loyal fans sometimes wrapped around the block.

The company now employs over 200 people and bakes 5,000 to 10,000 cupcakes a day. The assortment is ever-changing and includes seasonal and monthly flavors. Everyday, 15 cupcake flavors are offered, 9 classic and 6 special cupcakes, with an assortment that changes daily (their customers are known to frequently check the online schedule).

Georgetown Cupcake now distributes beyond their Georgetown and Bethesda locations, making their indulgences available nationwide by offering convenient overnight shipping at www.shop.georgetowncupcake.com. Freshly baked cupcakes can be shipped anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. Packaged in a bright pink box, Georgetown Cupcake will arrive fresh (and perfectly frosted and decorated).

Katherine and Sophie have also shared their tasty cupcakes on the TODAY, Rachael Ray and The Martha Stewart shows.
