Nashville, Tennessee, June 2013—Every time over the last 13 years that we’ve dined out with my nephew, he’s asked for a salad. The adults are splurging on triple cheeseburgers and fries, and the child is flavoring his greens with a dash of bleu cheese.

I was surprised every time. I still don’t know why he made that choice – it didn’t come from his parents – but I know that today he’s a lean and healthy 16-year-old heading for college soon. Did I mention he’s also a computer geek, multi-sport athlete and talented multi-instrument musician?

Minnetonka, Minnesota, May 2013—A new survey has found that a longer life doesn’t necessarily mean a longer list of regrets. When asked what they would have done differently if they knew they would live to 100, 50 percent of centenarians polled in UnitedHealthcare’s eighth annual 100@100 survey answered, “not a thing.”

Baby boomers aged 60-65 aren’t quite so content: only about 1 in 3 (29 percent) say the same thing about their lives so far, while more than a quarter (26 percent) say they wish they had saved more money.

Keeping Milk Milk

Chicago, Illinois, June 2013—The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to “keep milk milk” and reject an industry petition to amend the standard of identity of milk and milk products.

The petition, submitted by the International Dairy Foods Association and the National Milk Producers Federation, seeks to allow artificial sweeteners to be included in flavored milk and milk products as standard ingredients. If accepted, front-of-package labels for flavored milk products would bear no indication that artificial sweeteners had been added. Instead, consumers would have to read the ingredient list and recognize non-nutritive sweeteners by their scientific name to decipher if they had been included in the product.

Mason, Ohio, April 2013—The following is an opinion editorial provided by Dr. Barry Malinowski, Pediatrician and Medical Director for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio:

When was the last time you walked into a room full of kids and saw them moving around rather than sitting around playing video games?

As medical director for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, I often travel around Ohio and visit companies that offer our health insurance to their employees. It’s always interesting to learn what companies are doing when it comes to wellness in the workplace to help their employees live healthier lives. I always make it a point to brag about our support of the Get Active, Get Fit School Challenge – many are so intrigued, they help us spread the word.
