Salt Lake City, Utah, April 2010 – While many have learned the value in taking vitamins, supplements, and other nutritionals to improve overall health and wellness, most are probably not aware of some common misconceptions.

Vitamins, supplements, and nutritionals are needed now more than ever, but a label on a bottle does not always provide the full story. Below are 5 simple misconceptions, followed by ways to maximize effectiveness when taking vitamins, supplements, and other nutritionals.

* All tablets in a bottle of vitamins have the same potency:
False: When you see an ingredient amount on a bottle label, it may not reflect what is in each and every single tablet. Many tablets, let alone all tablets in a bottle may not contain the full potency suggested on the label.

* Vitamins will disintegrate upon consumption
False: Not necessarily. Many people do not know they may have a wide array of un-dissolved or partially un-dissolved pills in their stomach and thus have not absorbed the nutrients and received the benefit of the supplement.

* Daily diet gives us all the vitamins and minerals needed
False: Even those who eat exceedingly healthy could benefit from daily intake of vitamin and mineral supplements. Today’s diet of high calorie, processed foods have left deficiencies. Men and women also have very different nutritional needs.

* Overload on Vitamin C when you are sick
False: After 500 milligrams of Vitamin C is ingested over a 24 hour period, the body will still absorb Vitamin C, but at lower and lower levels. Taking massive quantities of Vitamin C is wasteful and not advised.

* One daily “multivitamin” does it all
False: While a “multivitamin” is better than nothing, individuals have specific nutritional needs, and not everyone is the same. Trusting your health to a “one size fits all” pill is not the ideal way to ensure your body gets what it needs.

USANA actively encourages consumers to make educated decisions regarding their health in conjunction with their health practitioner. It is important to understand that not all nutritional companies are alike. Individual brands’ research, development, ingredients, and manufacturing all play a role in how the body absorbs and uses their vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and other nutritional supplements. “There are three standards that must be met before a new formulation is incorporated into any of the USANA Health Sciences product lines,” states Dr. Tim Wood, Ph.D., Executive Vice President for Research & Development at USANA. “These are proven efficacy, outstanding quality, and uncompromised safety.”
