While exciting, this time of the year can be anxiety-inducing for children and parents alike. Here are a few tips to make the transition a smooth one and get the new school year off to a good start.

Make note of important information – Mark your calendar with important dates such as the first day of school, back-to-school night, etc., especially if you have children in different schools. Note school contact numbers and teacher contact information, in addition to numbers for checking school closures and reporting absences.

Familiarize – It is important to get to know your child’s teacher in order to get insight into your child’s behavior and keep up with the progress of his education. Schedule a meeting with his teacher and establish healthy parent-teacher communication. If your child is attending a new school, schedule a tour to familiarize him with his surroundings in order to make the transition into a new school as smooth as possible.

Stay busy – Children aren’t the only ones feeling anxious as they go back to school. It can be difficult for parents to adjust to a suddenly quiet, empty house. Keep yourself occupied once your children are back in school and focus on the time you now have to yourself to complete some of the things on your running mental list of projects.
