Washington, D.C., February 2009 – Last week, First lady Michelle Obama gave encouraging signs that growing food locally is an important goal of her husband’s administration.
Attending a news conference at the Department of Agriculture, Mrs. Obama said she was pleased that Secretary Tom Vilsack had mandated gardens at all USDA facilities around the world, including one in the nation’s capital that will feed fruits and vegetables to the city’s soup kitchens. ”I'm a big believer in community gardens,” she said, “both because of their beauty and for their access to providing fresh fruits and vegetables to so many communities across this nation and the world.” She presented the secretary and his colleagues with a seedling from the Jackson magnolia tree that sits on the South Portico of the White House, planted by President Andrew Jackson in honor of his wife, Rachel, who died just before they moved into the White House.
