Washington, D.C., October 2010 — Today (Friday, October 15), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will visit seniors at the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center to kick off Medicare’s open enrollment period which begins on November 15th and discuss how the Affordable Care Act strengthens Medicare. Her visit is scheduled for 1 P.M. EDT. http://www.hhs.gov/news

The address of the Center is 415 East 93rd Street, New York, NY, 10128.

She will be delivering the message that now is the time for Medicare beneficiaries to begin comparing current coverage and needs to what will be available next year. The Affordable Care Act provides new benefits for most beneficiaries for the coming year, including a 50 percent discount on brand name drugs if you hit the donut hole, (or “Stage 2” when subscribers must foot 100% of their bill) a free annual wellness visit and no co-pays for recommended preventive services such as mammograms and certain cancer screenings.

Starting this week, the 2011 Medicare and You handbook is being mailed to all beneficiaries. It’s a comprehensive guide that answers many of the most common questions about Medicare, provides up-to-date information about the prescription drug and health plans available, and offers tips and suggestions to ensure coverage meets the needs of each beneficiary.
