Oakland, California, October, 2010 — Countering the substantial drawbacks of heavy candy intake on Halloween, Pleasant Dental Care has launched its second annual Cash for Candy program to financially support Children’s Hospital Oakland and reward kids who value their oral and total health. On the week of November 1st, all children who trade in candy will receive no less than $5.00 each, and $5.00 per pound for larger amounts. Dr. Sepand Hokmabadi, D.D.S., the directing dentist of Pleasant Dental Care, will double the total reward amount and donate it to Children’s Hospital of Oakland. The candy will be discarded. “Everyone knows eating candy is bad for your teeth. But the truth is – with all the chemicals, food dyes, preservatives and sweeteners – candy is also bad for your total health,” says Dr. Hokmabadi. “This program helps hospitalized kids get well and motivates children to be kind - to themselves and others. Wonderfully, it also helps families begin to discuss smarter, healthier choices overall.”

Cash for Candy saw overwhelming success in its first year. More than 45 pounds of candy were discarded and Children’s Hospital of Oakland received a considerable donation. Those numbers are expected to improve dramatically this year since Halloween falls on a Sunday and children can trick-or-treat longer, thus they will have more candy to donate. In addition, with more families now acquainted with the program, more kids are likely to participate.

An advocate for healthy teeth and healthy living, Dr. Hokmabadi initiated Cash for Candy to make a positive difference on many levels. Supporting the mission of Children’s Hospital to help children get well promotes a healthier community, stronger families and an emphasis on individual wellness. Rewarding kids for donating their candy helps them understand the unhealthy truth about candy while giving them a virtuous way to help others.

Cash for Candy will run November 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th during business hours. For more details, email Dr. Hokmabadi at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
