The Let’s Move! campaign includes four pillars: more nutrition information, increased physical activity, easier access to healthy foods, and personal responsibility. The “Chefs Move to Schools” program, run through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, asks chefs to adopt schools in their community. Representing Kikkoman Sales USA, Inc. is chef Helen Roberts, manager of culinary development and public relations. Roberts will partner with other members of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) in supporting the Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative which began in 2006. “I am extremely honored to be a part of the first lady’s “Chefs Move to Schools” program,” said Roberts. “By partnering with other IACP members to champion the efforts of the Junior Leagues’ successful Kids in the Kitchen project, Kikkoman can make a positive impact at a grassroots level. It is all about educating, empowering and convincing kids to make their own healthy meal and snacking choices. That’s ultimately what will make a real and lasting difference.” Recently, Roberts joined more than 500 chefs, including those who staff corporate kitchens, food banks and culinary schools, on the South Lawn of the White House to launch the national program. The Let’s Move! campaign’s goal is to have the chefs work with teachers, parents, school nutritionists and administrators to help educate kids about food and nutrition, create healthy meals and teach young people about making balanced and healthy choices. Visit www.letsmove.org for more information. Kids in the Kitchen encourages youth to make healthy life choices and helps reverse the growth of childhood obesity by providing lessons and demonstrations related to the preparation of healthy meals and snacks. The program also provides guidelines, materials and a website, www.kidsinthekitchen.org, to help reinforce educational and motivational activities.
