West Hollywood, California, May 2010 — The song lyric about growing old being a drag was a song lyric written many years ago by Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. Is there a possibility he might not have been correct in his assessment?

We would suggest all surviving boomers look this way — toward the City of West Hollywood. They will soon host a program called Pathways to Positive Aging: Creating Communities for a Lifetime, a special half-day symposium on creating aging-friendly communities, on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park, at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood.

Its organizers report that their program will focus on creating communities for a lifetime, and will feature discussions and presentations that focus on national trends and models being used by cities and communities that enable residents to continue to live in their current surroundings as they encounter new needs and challenges that often accompany the natural process of aging.

“Things are changing quickly as Baby Boomers age,” says West Hollywood City Councilmember Lindsey Horvath. “It is essential that we all know as much as possible about new issues and trends regarding the aging population. This symposium will benefit seniors, professionals in the field of aging, educators, and all others interested in what it means to create a community that is a good place to age.”

According to the Administration on Aging, there were 38.9 million people in the U.S. alone over the age of 65 in 2008 — about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, that number will grow to approximately 72.1 million. In addition, according to the California Department of Aging, California’s aging population is expected to grow more than twice as fast as the total population, but will vary by region. This group is expected to have a unique set of needs; extremely different than aging populations in past years.

University of Southern California Professor of Architecture and Gerontology Victor Regnier will provide the keynote address about best practices and inspiring ideas for creating aging-friendly communities. Professor Regnier is a teacher, researcher and architect whose focus is the design of housing and community settings for older people.

He holds a joint professorship between the USC School of Architecture and the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, the only joint appointment of this kind in the United States.

A continental breakfast and refreshments will be served. Admission and parking are free. Advance registration is required.
