Amersfoort, The Netherlands, May 2009 – Nutreco Holding NV, the world’s largest producer of fish feed, has spent the last 10 years looking for a way to change the diet of farmed salmon by replacing fish meal from wild-caught fish with a blend of soybeans, rapeseed and ground-up chicken.

Now, the company said it is ready to take chicken out of the diet and make it entirely vegetarian, an elusive goal that is sure to please environmental groups that have made farmed salmon the poster fish for unsustainable seafood, according to Bloomberg.

“Without vegetarian food, fish farmers are on course to run out of supply to feed the world’s appetite for filets and fish fingers, as wild stock teeters on the verge of collapse from pollution and overfishing,” Bloomberg reported.

Fish feed is about 60 percent of the overall cost of farming salmon, according to the world’s largest producer of the species, Marine Harvest in Norway.

“We can produce a higher standard fish, in terms of sustainability,” Marine Harvest spokesman Joergen Christiansen told Bloomberg.
