Austin, Texas, August, 2009 – Whole Foods Markets, Inc. said earlier this month its nonprofit Whole Planet Foundation has teamed up with the Green Children Foundation, founded by the international music duo, to assist disadvantaged countries in advancing financially through microcredit - a lending program designed to promote entrepreneurship and monetary growth.
Hailing from Warwick, England and Alesund, Norway, the Euro-duo is bringing their self-proclaimed “Cinematic Fantasy Pop” sound to an International audience. The Green Children - Tom Bevan and Milla Sunde – have released multiple singles, including “Hear Me Now,” available via iTunes. The Green Children joined forces with Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus to establish The Green Children Foundation in 2006. Together, the non-profit organization raised over $500,000 going towards microcredit, education, healthcare and the first Grameen Green Children Eye Hospital in rural Bangladesh. The group will be featured in the Whole Planet Foundation’s new calendar – available in all Whole Foods Market stores, and will be performing at a series of Whole Foods Market events to promote awareness and plan to distribute their upcoming album through the major market chain. The Green Children are donating 50 percent of the proceeds towards a micro-lending project in India. In addition, the video for their single “Hear Me Now” will be available as a free video download via the Whole Planet Foundation Web site. The Austin-based retailer’s Whole Planet Foundation empowers the poor through microcredit in developing countries where the company sources products. To date, the foundation has committed $9.9 million for micro-lending projects, and has provided $5.3 million in grants to microfinance groups around the globe, resulting in $13 million in microcredit loans - usually less than $200 - to start home-based businesses. The project has given more than 41,000 people the chance to lift themselves and, on average five family members, out of poverty, effectively impacting a total of 205,000 people in communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. “We at Whole Planet Foundation and Whole Foods Market are enormously proud to have The Green Children as our partner,” says Philip Sansone, president and executive director of Whole Planet Foundation. “Through their amazing lyrical and musical gift, combined with their personal and professional philosophy of life, they personify the new higher consciousness emerging from young people today that I believe will transform the world in the 21st Century.” SOURCE: Sustainable Food News
