Everywhere, September 2011— Although surprisingly little has been reported on the subject, hearing loss is not only common among millions of people worldwide, it is a debilitating condition that can bring to bear other concerns like depression, anxiety and early onset dementia – from an inability to communicate freely with others, due to the simple reason that the affected person cannot hear the words, music and noises around him so that he might effectively communicate his feelings.
However, a recent Australian study has shown that an increased intake of vitamins A and E could significantly reduce the risk of hearing loss. In the study it was found that those with the highest intakes of vitamin A had a 47% reduced risk of moderate or greater hearing loss, compared to the group with the lowest average intakes. And where vitamin E was concerned, a 14% reduction in hearing loss was reported. Researchers have concluded that reactive oxygen may damage the inner portion of the ear that’s associated directly with hearing, and that antioxidants may counter this damaged – and reduce age-related hearing loss. Further studies are underway, and as more evidence is found, there is greater hope for the millions who suffer from mild to severe hearing loss, some of whom may be able to go without expensive and cumbersome hearing aids and implants.
