Beverly Hills, California, August 2011— Recently a company called Oxis International announced an agenda slated for the upcoming first International Congress on Ergothioneine. The conference was held last month on the UCLA campus, in Westwood and was attended by those who concentrate on the science of antioxidants and age management medicine.  www.oxis.com

Why Ergothioneine? It’s been around for awhile, but was back-shelved until recently ‘rediscovered’ as a ‘super antioxidant’ that fights oxidative stress, while promoting healthy aging and chronic disease prevention and management.

“L-ergothioneine may be the most important nutritional breakthrough in many years,” says Bernie Landes, President of Oxis International. “It is perhaps the most powerful and effective antioxidant ever, in fact 6,000 times more potent than Vitamin E, with unparalleled potential benefits for cognitive function, eye health, immune modulation, lung health, reproductive health, skin health and overall wellness at all stages of the aging process.”
Discovered by a French scientist in 1909, until now this nutrient has been dormant for over 100 years. Leading scientists now believe it is a nutrient essential to human life, but, unlike any other compound, it cannot be made by the human body or by plants. It is an amino acid with a unique structure naturally produced by microorganisms that exist in soil, and only found in very small quantities in certain exotic mushrooms, oat bran, beans and a few other foods.

Included on the agenda was the keynote lecture, given by Dr. Alexander Schauss, Ph.D., FACN, and the CEO of AIBMR Life Sciences, who discussed the importance of establishing safety for nutraceutical compounds, presenting extensive data on the safety of Ergothioneine.

Other speakers included Bruce N. Ames, Ph.D., Children’s Hospital, Oakland Research Institute; Stephen G. Clarke, Ph.D., Director, Molecular Biology Institute, UCLA; Dirk Grundemann, Ph.D., University of Cologne, Germany; Young Joon Surh, Ph.D., College of Pharmacy, Seoul National University, Korea, and Marvin Housman, M.D., Total Nutraceutical Solutions, Stevenson, Washington.

The conference was geared to healthcare professionals, wellness advocates, pharmaceutical scientists, physicians and pharmacists, alternative and complementary health practitioners and all those health professionals with an interest in the latest information on antioxidants and their role in the maintenance of good health throughout the aging process.
