February 1, 2011 – Here I am, writing to our readers on an intensely snowy day here in the Midwest, wishing for spring and wondering what 2011 is going to bring us. You might recall that over a year ago I reported that I was writing a memoir (see “My Memoir” written and posted sometime in 2009, when I was still at it.) The book, which describes what we liked to call a “Frank Capra” – like upbringing in a beautiful, growing, safe (then little) college town, begins when I’m four years old and about to have my tonsils removed. It concludes 300 or so pages later when at the age of 17 my three closest male friends and I leave the state to attend Northwestern, Yale, Harvard and Notre Dame Universities, respectively. When we arrived in Evanston, New Haven, Harvard and South Bend we were terribly homesick, and to calm our fears, wrote to each other – often. One of my friends saved those letters and several years ago, and as it turned out, the last time all of us were together, we pulled out the letters and read some of them aloud. We remarked that while just 17 years old at the time, how well written our pre-e-mail letters were. From there the discussion led to the tremendous K-through 12 education we received (we all graduated from the University of Missouri-sponsored Laboratory School System,) which had helped mold us into the good writers we became. And from that point, based on my ability to remember the little things and being the only one of the four to eventually return home, it was decided that I should write the book that would chronicle our special upbringing. Since I am otherwise gainfully employed, it took some time to complete this project, land a national publisher, find a good editor and go through it 3-4 times myself to ensure it was what I wanted it to be. Associates (those who know me but are not family or close friends) tell me I have something special for the reading public to see. I hope they’re right. Time will soon tell, for the publication date is looming – and the finished product, titled Thumbs Up, V for Victory, I Love You, should be ready in hardbound, soft cover and e-book in the next 4-5 weeks. More on that later.
